Seven Fatimid (Egyptian) Viziers were Armenian. The most famous among them was Badr el Gamali. His kin built Babel el-Futuh, Bab el-Nasr and Bab el-Weila. His son was the governor of Jerusalem when the Crusaders invaded the Holy Land. Fatimid and Memeluke armies employed Armenians as heavy armored cavalry. After the fall of Cilicia, many Armenian soldiers became mercenaries in Egypt and elsewhere in the Middle East, some became generals.
