Mr. Trump, Will You Disappoint the Armenian People Like Mr. Biden?

It is known that the Republican presidential candidate, and now the US President Donald Trump, on his own initiative, had a telephone conversation with the Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, Aram the First.

According to the official report, the conversation took place in a warm, friendly atmosphere, during which Donald Trump expressed his support for the Armenians of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) and the establishment of complete peace in the region.

He highly appreciated the activities of Aram I for his wise leadership, and also welcomed the Armenian community of America, stressing that it is an organized, active and strong community.

The Supreme Patriarch also thanked Trump for the public support for the rights of the Armenians of Artsakh and stressed the importance of US global leadership in the current crisis.

Catholicos Aram I told the presidential candidate that the Armenian community of the United States hopes first of all to resolve two issues: 1. It is necessary for the new Government of the United States to express full support for the just demand of the Armenians of Artsakh to return to their historical lands and confirm their right to self-determination, while simultaneously demanding accountability for the genocide committed against the Armenian population of the region; and 2. it is necessary for the new government to have a person representing the Armenian community of America.

The Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia also said that on these issues it is necessary to consult with the national leaders of the Armenian Apostolic Church in the United States, as well as with representatives of the Hay Tad office in Washington.

Recall that on October 24, 2024, Donald Trump wrote on his page on the Truth social network that the current vice president and his Democratic rival Kamala Harris did nothing when “120,000 Armenian Christians were horrifically persecuted and forcibly displaced in Artsakh.” He continued, “When I am President, I will protect persecuted Christians, I will work to stop the violence and ethnic cleansing, and we will restore PEACE between Armenia and Azerbaijan.”

Donald Trump, in fact, accused Azerbaijan of carrying out ethnic cleansing in Artsakh. He announced to the whole world that “120,000 Armenian Christians were horrifically persecuted and forcibly displaced in Artsakh.”

Who subjected 120,000 Armenian Christians to terrible persecution and forced displacement? Azerbaijan, of course. And what does forced displacement mean? This is the same ethnic cleansing, and ethnic cleansing, as you know, is a manifestation and an integral part of the policy of genocide.

It goes without saying that Artsakh cannot be part of a state that carries out ethnic cleansing and genocide, and peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan can be established only if the international community recognizes the independence of Artsakh or its reunification with Armenia. Let’s hope that this is what Donald Trump meant when he spoke about establishing peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan. For only a mentally ill person can seek peace by pushing the victim back into the country that committed genocide. No peace treaty is concluded with those who carry out ethnic cleansing, and sanctions are usually imposed against them.

Sources close to the US Democratic Party, of course, urge the Armenian people and, above all, the Armenians of the United States not to take Donald Trump’s promises and statements seriously, especially those of an election nature. They claim that Trump is an incorrigble liar and his words are constantly at odds with his deeds, that he is in close corrupt ties with the authorities of Azerbaijan, Israel and Russia, that he needed the votes of American Armenians only to be elected, and he, like Biden, will let down hundreds of thousands of US citizens of Armenian origin.

We think that the responsible persons of the Armenian community of the United States will have the opportunity to ask the newly elected President of the United States: Mr. Trump, are your promises and assessments voiced in a telephone conversation with His Holiness Aram I valid, or are you also going to disappoint us like Mr. Biden?

  1. Anybody can say a few sweet words. It doesn’t mean anything. The modern world is about business. It is not good for business to do something that is against the interests of Turkey or Azerbaijan. I think it was Donald that placed an extensive set of sanctions on Turkey but only because Turkey bought some weapons from Russia and they keep pissing off NATO for about 20 y. Armenia is not on the minds of any western country. The EU was going to accept Turkey and part of the conditions was for them to accept the armenian genocide which quickly got removed from the list.
The Artsakh situation was spoken at the EU and finally, they decided they need natural gas from Azerbaijan so they decided to remove that issue from their list.
When it comes to Ukraine, I don’t think any of them care what their religion is and neither does the republican party. Their focus is Russia for some reason. I am thinking it is business related. Perhaps they want to keep Russia out of certain markets so they wanted Russia to get into a long war with someone.
The thing that people talk about a lot is how much is all that weaponry costing them. Apparently Ukraine has a lot of untapped natural gas so perhaps once they win, they will pay back with that.
I have never heard a priest from the USA talk about christians getting persecuted. They talk about christians being “persecuted” in the USA because a christian bakery is forced to give service to a gay couple. Or Chic-fil-A or Lowes is forced to pay for insurance that also covers birth control or abortions. Ya, life is tough on the christians in the USA.

  2. Mr. Aghajanyan,
Perhaps the question to ask would be what’s in it for President Trump, personally and/or politically, to remember and keep his promise to a Catholicos of the Armenian Church.
After all, Armenians were fooled by a long list of Mr. Trump’s predecessors, at a time when Armenians in Armenia, Artsakh, and the diaspora were more empowered than now.

  3. Personally, for Armenia and Armenians, based on Trump’s and his adminstration’s past performances and actions, I find his call to Aram Cathlicos the greatest subterfuge and hypocricy of the century.
I wish I will be proven wrong.
    Bedros Kojian

  4. Interestingly, there is a lot about Armenian issues in the Trump team…

US Secretary of State candidate Marco Rubio on Artsakh

Senator Marco Rubio from Florida may become the new US Secretary of State under Donald Trump. On November 6 and 7, American publications The Hill and Politico wrote about this, citing sources in Trump’s entourage, who won the United States presidential election.
After the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States, Rubio said that the war in Ukraine had “reached an impasse” and that it needed to end. At the same time, he noted that “Ukrainians were incredibly brave and strong” defending themselves from Russian aggression.
American taxpayers should not pay for the military support of Azerbaijan from the United States, Senator Mark Rubio said on November 21, 2023 after the occupation of Artsakh and the deportation of the indigenous population. In the social network X (formerly Twitter), he recalled that the Senate of the US Congress adopted the act on the protection of Armenia, which stops such assistance.
“U.S. taxpayer dollars should not be sent to Azerbaijan, a country that has brought instability to the region. My colleagues in the Senate agree, and together we adopted the act on the protection of Armenia. I urge my colleagues in the House of Representatives to do the same,” Rubio wrote.
The Act on the Protection of Armenia was adopted in the U.S. Senate on November 15. The document stipulates that in 2024-25, the US president will not be able to use his decrees to provide military and technical support to Azerbaijan. The U.S. Senate adopted the draft unanimously.
In February 2024, U.S. Senators Ed Markey and Bill Cassidy submitted a bipartisan resolution demanding a report on the human rights situation in Azerbaijan. The report should become the basis for the United States to change or stop providing security assistance to Azerbaijan.
The resolution requires the Secretary of State to provide detailed information on both human rights violations in Azerbaijan and ethnic cleansing during and as a result of military operations in Nagorno-Karabakh. Other senators joined the resolution: Marco Rubio, Gary Peters, Elizabeth Warren, Sheldon Whitehouse, Bob Menendez and Peter Welch.

  5. The future head of the US National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, whose candidacy was proposed by President-elect Donald Trump, maintains fairly close relations with the Armenian structures of the United States. In 2017, she visited Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh as part of a conference organized by the Armenian National Committee of America. She is originally from Hawaii, this state recognized the independence of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) in 2016.
