Hagop Arevian, a prominent member of the Armenian Legion, was born (1894) in a village near Sepastia, educated at Mkhitarians in Istanbul and trained in military service in Cyprus. After the French abandoned Cilicia in 1920, he settled in Egypt. In 1939 he became an early supporter of the French Resistance. From 1940 to 1945 he organized a hospice for the Resistance and received the French Medal of Resistance. Ten years after returning to Egypt, he and his wife were expelled (1956) from Egypt and given only 48 hours to pack. Arevian returned to Paris, where he became an Officer of the Legion of Honor and given the privilege of rekindling the flame at the Monument of the Unknown Soldier at the Arc de Triumph in 1959. He died in Paris in 1965.
