Armenian Chemist Andon Surian

During the plague in Venice (1575) an Armenian chemist Andon Surian invented a drug which saved many lives and curbed the contagious disease. He also invented a machine for the Arsenal which could recover sunken ships. But the most important contribution of Surian was his manufacturing super-strong cannons which later played a crucial role in the Christian victory against the Turkish fleet in Lopanto. The Surian cannons had a longer range that that of the Turkish cannons. During the battle, Surian demonstrated his ingenuity yet again when he rescued a Venetian war ship from sinking.
