Don Valley West Readers, Get Involved to Elect Amara Possian

Amara Possian is running to represent TDSB Ward 11, Don Valley West.

One of the most diverse wards in the city, Don Valley West is home to the neighbourhoods of Lawrence Park, Leaside, Thorncliffe Park, Bridal Path, Sunnybrook, Wanless Park, Windfields, York Mills, and Hoggs Hollow.

The TDSB Ward 11 boundaries are the same as Toronto City Council Ward 15 and the provincial riding of Don Valley West. It is bounded by Mount Pleasant Rd. and Yonge St. to the west, the 401 to the north, Leslie St. to the east, and the Don River to the south.

The TDSB Ward 11 boundaries are the same as Toronto City Council Ward 15 and the provincial riding of Don Valley West. It is bounded by Mount Pleasant Rd. and Yonge St. to the west, the 401 to the north, Leslie St. to the east, and the Don River to the south.

Until a few days ago, TDSB Ward 11 had slightly different boundaries and was called TDSB Ward 13. On August 14, the Better Local Government Act (Bill 5), passed third reading at Queen's Park then became law. This required Toronto to align City Council ward boundaries with current provincial ridings and reduced the number of Toronto City Council seats from 47 to 25.

As trustee wards must align with City wards, the TDSB met on August 9 to approve a realignment plan. Because of timelines imposed by the province, public consultation on changes was not possible. Under Bill 5, Ward 13 became Ward 11 and now aligns with the provincial riding of Don Valley West.

The TDSB also voted to support the City of Toronto's consideration of legal action. City Council is meeting on August 20. On August 31, a judge is scheduled to hear whether the Ford government’s Better Local Government Act should be in force for Toronto’s 2018 election. We will know on, or shortly after, August 31 if Toronto’s election will be run based on a 47 or 25 ward system.
