Erzerum is called Karin (Gareen) in Armenian. The Byzantines called it Theodosiopolis in honor of Emperor Theodosius (408-418). It was an important commercial centre for merchants from India, Persia, Armenia and Byzantine cities. The Arabs called the city Qaliqala or Ard al Rum.
