Hai Tor

According to legend in the village of Isaba in the Basque country the village was founded by Armenians, who were the first inhabitants of the province of Navarro and are the ancestors of the Basques. And according to the same legend, the leader of the Basque people was named Haitor. He came from Armenia with his seven sons and in their honor founded seven settlements in Navarro. Historiographers say Haytor means “arrived from Hai” or originated from Hai” which correlates precisely with the Armenian “Hai tor” (Armenian grandchild). The theory of the Armenian origins of the Basques had deep roots in the latter’s’ collective memory and is reflected in their written sources. Among Basque writer who say the Basques came from Armenia are Esteban de Garibai, Andres de Posa, Balthazar de Echave, and Gaspar Escolano.
