Holy Muron (Chrism) or holy oil is prepared from olive oil. In the general sense, chrism means perfumed oil. Initially, muron was used to heal the sick. Later on, it was used to unction (anoint the ordained clergy, as well as in baptism, extreme unction and in enthroning kings). Muron is prepared every seven years. Forty-five ingredients are required. They are powdered, mixed in a cauldron and then olive oil, balsam and wine are added. The mixture is then boiled so that the perfumed ingredients are transmitted to the oil. His Holiness the Catholicos of All Armenians blesses the new muron and mixes it with the old. The muron is distributed to Armenian churches all over the world.
