Kildare Dobbs’ “Anatolian Suite”

In his “Anatolian Suite” travel book published in the ‘80s, Canadian writer Kildare Dobbs gave this advice to women traveling in Turkey: “If you’re thinking of travelling alone in eastern Turkey, forget it. Go with a man, no matter what your principles are. Otherwise, they’ll think you’re a loose woman.” In the same book, Dobbs also quoted novelist Kenize Mourad, great-granddaughter of one of the last Turkish sultans, who told him: “Oh, there was no genocide. There were massacres, yes, but no genocide. I think when a massacre goes over a million people, it’s genocide. And when it’s directed by the government, as it was in this [Armenian] case, it’s also no genocide.”
