Mamoulian Makes William Holden a Star

Talking about the popular “Golden Boy”, director Rouben Mamoulian said: “I found the subject of “Golden Boy” in a news-clipping, and I decided to get William Saroyan to do it. He hated the studio and gave up. Then someone did another script, but we couldn’t find a star. Finally we go William Holden and Clifford Odets and the whole thing worked out as a good film in a minor key.” Holden, who was unknown until then, became a star thanks to the movie.
