No to Dictatorship in Armenia

The citizens of Armenia are set to face a fresh brutal assault by a desperate regime clinging to graft and power. While many Diaspora Armenians have been patiently tolerating the current situation, hoping for change and a better future, Serj Sargsyan and his regime have crafted a new scheme to hold on to power for yet another 10 years.  If the previous decade of corrupt lawless rule emptied our nation of 400,000 citizens, buried our country in billions of dollars of debt, and relinquished a strategic swathe of Artsakh, one can only imagine the devastation yet to visit Armenia, devastation not mere material, but of the whole fabric of who we are.  We did not survive Genocide to crown an eternal tyrant.  We cannot tolerate or survive the loss of what binds us together as a nation: respect for the voice of every last one of us.  Armenia Shall Not Be a Dictatorship.

Armenians in the homeland and from across the Diaspora are coming together at this critical juncture of our history, with a singular goal: Prevent Serj Sargsyan from grabbing power. This will be achieved through mass civil disobedience and blocking the parliament building. The current parliament should be dismissed, and free and fair elections should be held.

The #ՄերժիրՍերժին (#RejectSerge) campaign's principle is very simple: #ՄերժիրՍերժին starts with each one of us doing #ԻմՔայլը (#MyMove). All political differences have been set aside, and the entire opposition and youth organisations are gathering at Liberty square to make their #ԻմՔայլը protest.

Diasporan Armenians of all stripes have joined the movement. We are calling every one of you to join #ՄերժիրՍերժին by doing #ԻմՔայլը. #ԻմՔայլը, named #ՍփյուռքիՔայլը (#Diaspora’sMove) in the diaspora, is raising money to buy food for those who are going to the streets to protest and staying there day and night until we regain our country.

Please do not be indifferent.  Be filled instead with courage and hope. You can send funds either to the contact persons mentioned below, or you can pledge the amount by writing one of us in the email address bar and we can do it on your behalf. You can contact your friends and relatives who are in the streets or are helping those in the streets and send directly to them. Just remember to mention #ՍփյուռքիՔայլը. We are adding also #ԿանադայիՔայլը and/or #ԹորոնթոյիՔայլը. If you would like to mention your name we can also hyphenate the hashtags.

Forward this email to those in your communities and network. We do our best, we do #ԻմՔայլը.  Your contribution to purchase food for the protestors for the next week starting today will be appreciated. Please follow the instructions that appear after the below video-clip.

  1. We can’t afford to be indifferent

Thank you Keghart. It is a crucial time for us to unite under one umbrella to get rid of  HHK crooks. We can't afford more bleeding and emigration, we can't afford a failed statehood. We, our generation survived war, blockade, hunger, our parents and grandparents Genocide which all were externally imposed on us. Nevertheless our people overcame all those calamities only to loose now to crooks? We can't afford and we will not. Armenia, that small piece of land should and will prosper, and grow as a free and fair state at all cost.

  2. Serj Sarggsyan has to go!

Thank you Kheghart. The only way to get rid of Sargsyan and his group of THUGS is by making it impossible to rule. Civil disobedience. We would also like for the traitors within the Tashnagtsutiun leadership to stop supporting  Serj Sargsyan. Time has come for this genocidal pseudo-leader to get arrested, charged and sent to jail. Wake up Armenia! Wake up Diaspora. Enough is Enough.

  3. Superb Student Civil Disobedience

I am following developments in the streets of Yerevan live with the assistance of the laptop. Mostly students are present. They have done a superb job in obstructing the avenues that lead to the parliament led by parliamentarian Nikol Pashinyan. He looks relatively young and quite agile.

No major incidents are noted except a couple. At one point a car dashed towards the students, but it was prevented to cross by the human shield formed by the students. Another incident which occurred in the presence of the police could have deteriorated into a significant pretext for the authorities to intervene and disrupt the peaceful disobedience.

A car approached and five people got off. Without provocation they started beating students who responded in self-defence by shielding themselves with their hands protecting their heads. One young fellow received relatively severe facial injuries. He was carried away by friends probably for treatment.

There were no arrests and the attackers were let go.

A lady presented flowers to the police who refused the offer. They looked puzzled and remained mum when the lady tried to verbally engage them. The episode was reminiscent of the Carnation Revolution in Portugal when soldiers were receptive unlike here.

  4. Diaspora #RejectYourInnerSerj

I don’t understand those gousaktsutsyunner who are active in the Diaspora, churches, agumbner and any national Diaspora organisations. Did they become numb or is this their nature? How low can you bend against tyranny? Is this what you were doing 100 years ago when an entire nation was going through the Genocide? It’s disgusting to see how low the Dashnag party has stooped. Where is your pride? Every single one of you being silent will be responsible and will eventually pay generationally. Diaspora #RejectYourInnerSerj

    1. The Dashnak party has always

The Dashnak party has always fought against external tyranny, the Ottoman empire, and its successor, Imperial Russia and its successor the Soviet Empire. We are in a different ground now. We are trying to build a democracy in our own state. Social unrest cannot be the answer. It only helps those who want to see our nation fail. As far as I can understand, dialogue and changes, persisting on changes, via the existing institutions in Armenia, is the route the Dashnak have chosen as a strategy. Forcing changes through the street, in the streets, is not the answer for them. It appears to be your choice. Not that of the Dashnak. I hope this clarifies.

  5. How to change a government?

How to change a government? There are 2 ways; the Democratic way, via the voting booths, or via civil unrest. I am saddened to see that Keghart.com is asking the Diaspora to finance civil unrest in Armenia. A dangerous route which could result in civil war.

The reality is, as a result of last elections, the Republican party is majority in parliaments, so they have the opportunity to nominate the Prime Minister. I can hear you saying, but the last elections were falsified. You are NOT totally CORRECT. International observers, in their reports highlighted that there was NO vote rigging in the voting booths. But, they said, outside the voting booths, they had received reports of vote buying, influencing employees, etc. But the result is that the people, when inside the voting booth, “unfortunately” 75% cast their vote for the Republican Party.

You will probably argue that the RP has all the leverages. But Civil unrest is the only answer. That type of conclusion is disaster for Armenia. What needs to be done is to “educate the people” that they are free to choose their leaders. That they should not be afraid from reprisals. Once they are behind the voting booth, there is no way to check and find out who they voted for. Even if they were paid for.

The next election, in 4 years (not 10 years) is an opportunity to change regime in Democratic way. By then our role is to create the peoples mind set, they should be influenced by external forces, once behind the voting booth they are free to vote for the party they trust. If you, Keghart.com want my money, to educate the people, to build their confidence in themselves, and decide for themselves, you will obtain money from Diaspora. Money for Civil unrest NO. Armenia cannot afford it. Our enemies will be happy to have unrest in Armenia.

I wonder if you have the courage to publish my comment. We will see.

    1. Gerard, every single sentence is a twist

Gerard, your every single sentence is a complete twist of the truth. If I start to break it down, then it will take forever and perhaps this is your only goal here and you are the regime’s next troll. I will just highlight for you and for EVERYBODY who will dare to twist the truth and accuse Keghart, the only true and independent media in Armenian Diaspora, in endorsing to finance civil unrest in Armenia.

This call is only for FOOD, for those who are in the street. If this simple idea “give food” is not obvious and it’s not accessible to some heads, then I have nothing to say.

  6. Reactions Appearing on Facebook

Thousands of comments have appeared. Only a small fraction is presented here.

  7. Serj Sargsyan as Prime Minister

Armenia is falling in the trap of what Putin has done for Russia…how to be an autocrat under the guise of so called Democracy. Putin manipulated the Russian Duma, Medvedev and the oligarchs to remain in power.

Is the same happening in Armenia? The ruling of the elite and not the people? Is this the slippery slope towards a final authoritarian regime,  as with Erdogan, Aliyev, Orban, Assad….?

    1. Don’t confuse

Don't confuse Sargsyan, Aliyev and Erdogan with Putin, Orban and Assad. These latter three were democratically elected and are working for the welfare of their country and people, which specially is not the case for Sargsyan and Aliyev.
