Lberal Nominations
While listening to Mr. Attarian's involvement in Liberal Party political platform and his senior position there since 2006, I wonder why subsequent Liberal governments have refused to recognize the Armenian Genocide and even PM Paul Martin ORDERED his ministers to vote against it. As someone who has participated in meetings with five Liberal and Progressive Conservative foreign ministers and heard the same "Armenian issue happened before 1948" excuse, it took Harper's government three months in office to recognize the Genocide at a government level.
Armenian political aspirants should have run as Conservatives if the Armenian Hay Tad is of paramount importance to them to maintain current government policy. Please note that senior Conservative leaders have already mentioned their concern about "our" Liberal leanings.
Armenians should follow their personal political convictions
Dear Mr. Hagopian,
I am a Liberal by conviction, because I believe that the ideas espoused by the Liberal Party are what is best for Canada and Canadians. I am not there based on their position regarding the Genocide of Armenians. But, because of my position within the party, I will absolutely work for the advancement of our cause, because I believe it is the right thing to do for Canada.
For the record, there was no Liberal government after 2006.
For the record, it was a Liberal-dominated Senate that took the initiative for the recognition of the Genocide. This was spearheaded by Sen. Setlakwe and Sen. Shirley Maheu. I was there during numerous meetings and negotiations planning for this first step.
For the record, it was a Liberal minority parliament that voted for the recognition of the Genocide in the House of Commons. I was also there during the numerous initiatives to make this happen.
For the record, you are correct that Paul Martin had instructed his ministers to vote against that motion, but please remember that brave and righteous individuals such as Stéphane Dion decided to defy the Prime Minister and support us.
Finally, for the record again, when Stephen Harper made the recognition of our Genocide official policy, I wrote a personal letter to him (as then chairman of the AGBU in Montreal) thanking him for his courageous act.
I also believe that many Canadian-Armenians have Conservative values and in fact, I have written extensive essays on this topic which were published on Keghart.com. Such Armenians who truly and honestly believe in Conservatism and who have political aspirations should run under the Conservative banner.
While I respect them, I just don't happen to be one of them. I hope you will appreciate my position.
Paregamoren,
Viken Levon Attarian
