Our Condolences to Ohan Duryan’s Family

1. Hovhannes Khatcharourian

   As a point of interest about Ohan Duryan, I would like to relate to the readers an excerpt from Antranig Zaroukian’s book, "Old Dreams, New Roads" (Heen Yerazner, Nor Janpaner) published in 1960. The book is a recommended reading of bygone days of Armenia and Diaspora.

    

   Zaroukian noted that he had met the Palestine-born and -raised promising musician named Hovhannes Khatchardourian for the very first time either in Beirut, Aleppo or Paris. He said that he was so impressed by the aspiring and talented musician that he titled an article about him in "Nairi"–the literary periodical he edited–as "Khatchadourian No.2".

    

   Zaroukian then noted that Hovhannes Khatchadourian was enraged at the title which likened him to Khatchardourian; he vowed he would not want to be a second even to Khatchadourian and that he either became the first or nothing at all.
    

   To distance himself from Khatchadourian, he had "Khatch" removed from his name and became Durian or Duryan, and later came forth as Ohan.
    

   Zaroukian also noted that Catholicos of All Armenian Vazken I took notice of the promising young musician in Paris during a pontifical visit. The Catholicos invited him to Armenia, helped him settle there and become a citizen.

   Zaroukian then described Duryan’s first conducting of the Armenian National Opera and Ballet Theater, named after Alexander Spendiaryan. The theater was considered second only to Moscow’s in the Soviet Union, wrote Zaroukian.
    

   The rest is history whose demise Keghart notes. May he rest in peace.

   1. Maestro, in fact, was not granted Citizenship

      Dear Vahe,

      Thank you for your interesting comment. One remark though, the Maestro did not have citizenship. He had a residence status in Armenia that was not even prolonged by our authorities, let alone grantng citizenship. Please see below how Ohan Duryan was treated by our Government when he tried to prolong his status. He "deserved" such a treatment because of sympathizing with Levon Ter-Petrosyan.

      ՀՀ իշխանությունները հերթական ճղճիմությունն են թույլ տվել: Աշխարհահռչակ դիրիժոր Օհան Դուրյանի եւ նրա կնոջ` երգչուհի Ալիս Դուրյանի Հայաստանում հատուկ կեցության անձնագրերի ժամկետը երկարաձգելու համար նախ տուգանել են մեծանուն դիրիժորին եւ նրա տիկնոջը, հետո 300 հազար դրամ պահանջել: 10 տարի առաջ ՀՀ իշխանությունները մեծ շուքով ՀՀ-ում հատուկ կեցության անձնագրեր հանձնեցին Ֆրանսիայի քաղաքացիներ Դուրյանին եւ նրա կնոջը: Այս տարվա հունիսի 16-ին դրանց ժամկետը լրացել է: Ու քանի որ արանքում էլ շաբաթ, կիրակի է եղել, Ալիս Դուրյանը ՀՀ ոստիկանության անձնագրերի եւ վիզաների համապատասխան ստորաբաժանմանն է դիմել միայն հունիսի 20-ին:

      Այստեղ, սակայն, նրան տեղեկացրել են, որ պետք է 50 հազարական դրամ տուգանք վճարի` ուշ դիմելու համար: Երբ տիկին Դուրյանը վճարել է պահանջվող 100 հազարը, նրան հայտնել են, որ 150 հազարական դրամ էլ պետք է վճարի անձնագրերի ժամկետը երկարաձգելու համար: Ալիս Դուրյանը հարցրել է, թե գիտե՞ն ով է Օհան Դուրյանը: Անձնագրայինի աշխատակիցները, բնականաբար, հրաշալի տեղյակ են եղել, որ խոսքն աշխարհահռչակ դիրիժորի մասին է: Կարճատեւ զրույցից հետո անձնագրայինի աշխատակիցները տիկին Դուրյանին խորհուրդ են տվել դիմում գրել Սերժ Սարգսյանին: Իսկ երբ Ալիս Դուրյանը հայտարարել է, որ ինքն այդ անկոչ նախագահին դիմում չի գրի, նրան պատասխանել են, որ իրենք կգրեն: Անձնագրայինից Սերժ Սարգսյանին, ինչպես երեկ մեզ հայտնի դարձավ, դիմում գրել են: Իսկ արդեն նախօրեին Ալիս Դուրյանի հետ հեռախոսազրույց է ունեցել ոստիկանության անձնագրերի եւ վիզաների վարչության պետ Նորայր Մուրադխանյանը եւ հայտնել, որ գումարը պետք է վճարվի: Այստեղ խնդիրը, բնականաբար, գումարը չէ: Ինքը` Օհան Դուրյանը նման խնդիր չունի: Նա ՀՀ-ում աշխատելու տարիներին երբեք իր աշխատավարձը չի ստացել, իսկ իր ղեկավարած նվագախմբերի երաժիշտներին իր գրպանից մշտապես հավելյալ գումարներ է վճարել: Տեղի ունեցածը պարզապես ամոթ է: Նման բան թույլ է տրվել մի անձի հանդեպ, որի համերգից հետո Ավստրիայի այն ժամանակվա կանցլեր Բրունո Քրայսկին մոտեցել է դիրիժորին եւ ասել, որ իրենց համար մեծ պատիվ է նման քաղաքացի ունենալը եւ Ավստրիայի քաղաքացիություն է շնորհել մաեստրոյին:

      1. Reminded Me of Shahnour
         Dear Aram,

          

         Your correction is due not only for historical accuracy but of the sad Armenian reality it amply illustrates. It reminded me of the following.
          

         Shahan Shahnour is considered to be one of the greatest post-Genocide Armenian writers. His book "Nahanche Arantz Yerkee" (The Retreat Without Song) is considered an Armenian literary classic. Shahnour also excelled as a French writer, using the pseudonym Armen Lupin.
          
         Shahnour said that Armenians can only find refuge in the shadow of the three summits of their long turbulent history–Gomidas Vartabed, Antranig Pasha and the Order of Mekhitarists. The rest, he said, is the history of the dealings of pathetic figures. Of course it is a generalization, maybe uttered during his long and debilitating illness. The illness caused him much pain, long stays at hospitals, eventually impoverishing him.
          

         However, it seems the sad reality is bound to come out, one way or another, even at a momentous occasion such as this.

   Օհան դուրյանը մեծ էր, թե՛ որպես երաժիշտ, և թե՛ որպես արդարության համար պայքարող քաղաքացի…

3. Համահայկական վշտակցութիւն Օհան Տուրեանի յաւերժալոյս յիշատակին

   Օհան Տուրեանի  կեանքը եղաւ անվերջակէտ որոնում եւ պայքար
   վասն Բարիի, Գեղեցիկի եւ ճշմարիտի մեծ իրագործումին:

   Ֆիզիքական իր կեանքին վախճանը սկիզբն է իր Յաւերժաերթին:

   Մեծ էր ան իր կենդանութեան: Յետ այսու՝ Ազգային Մեծութիւն մը:

   Երէկ՝ հողեղէն, այսօր՝ Ոգեղէն Էութիւն մը:

   Հայ Մարդ մը՝ համամարդկային բարձրագոյն արժանիքներով օժտուած:

   Արուեստագէտ մը՝ համաշխարհային բարձունքներ նուաճած. անունը՝
   ՕՀԱՆ ՏՈՒՐԵԱՆ:

   Յաւերժ լոյս եւ խաղաղութիւն իր բազմախոնջ հոգիին, եւ վշտակցութիւն
