Tamanyan Division reached Berlin

When the Second World War broke out Soviet Armenia formed six national divisions. The 390th Division was the first to go to the front. It took part in the Battle of Kerch Peninsula. Commander Simon Zakyan was killed in battle. The 89th Tamanyan Division was the only one to reach Berlin. It got its name for the heroic acts of its fighters on the Taman Peninsula. The 76th Rifle Division, formed in 1922 to defend Armenia’s western border, engaged in the war as soon as war was declared and advanced to the Battle of Stalingrad. The 261st Rifle Unit remained to guard the Armenian/Turkish border. The 408th and 409th Divisions pursued a brilliant military path and reached the Czech Republic and Austria.
