The Struggle for Genuine Democracy in Armenia

Prof. Khatchatur I. Pilikian,  Socialist History Society, London UK, 5 May 2018

What is happening in Armenia is essentially the conflict between Representative Democracy and Direct Democracy. Representative Democracy is, as always, masterfully manipulated especially by Capitalism to camouflage Democracy, sometimes to the extreme — dragging it to cover-up mafia oligarchy – as in Armenia, now a ‘free, democratic’ Third Republic…

Long last, Direct Democracy of the vast majority of the population of Armenia is trying to change the situation to acquire genuine democracy, hoping to scrap mafia infested capitalism of the republic. The crucial question remains, whether this healthy popular revolt will remain clear from the manipulative intrigues of the reactionary forces of Armenia and its Diaspora, not to mention some powerful Western governments and their abusive NGOs — as it happened to other coloured revolutions in various countries.

This year being the 200 Anniversary of Karl Marx, I do remember well his enthusiasm for Direct Democracy of the Paris Commune. Also because what is happening in our Labour Party here in Britain, is yet again a good example of what Direct Democracy of the Labour common people in their ca half a million are adamant in supporting Jeremy Corbyn, while some manipulative Representative Democracy members of the Labour Party are trying hard to ruin Jeremy’s healthy influence on the Labour movement…

Thank heavens, to date the popular revolt of the Armenian people is adamant in keeping its peaceful character. Alas, the three nationalist parties in the Armenian Diaspora have, yet again, declined to bring their forces together in support of the popular revolt in Armenia proper, preferring, most of the time, to keep their competing politics of individualism, keeping the leadership of the Diaspora in their grip — even when history has proven their wrong and dangerous politics…

Let’s hope the popular revolt of the people of Armenia succeeds, and peacefully so.
