The Way We Were -The Way We Are

Vahe H. Apelian, Loveland, OH, 14 June 2015

This third and the last volume of the sequel, The Way We Were -The Way We Are, is a collection of book reviews and translations. The first five chapters are reviews of books. The following twenty chapters are translations of segments, stories from books and articles from journals pertaining to memorable happenings in the Armenian Diaspora communal life over the past century. The authors, some of whom are prominent Armenian writers, are listed on the Index Page.

There are many famous quotes about translation that range from stating that "Translation is sin" (Grant Showerman) to "Without translation, we would be living in provinces bordering on silence" (George Steiner).

It is inevitable that translations, to an extent, become a reflection of the translator. To alert readers that there might be unintentional intrusion into the literary piece, I used the word "abridged" whenever I translated a piece even though the translation might have been as verbatim as possible. Much like the contents of the previous two books of this sequel, these translations were also posted on Keghart.com.

In spite of the fact that translation by its very nature is an imperfect art, without translations greater societies will remain confined, if not trapped in the literary or cultural cocoons of their own making.

Fifteen centuries after the great translations into Armenian during the fifth century, there is growing need for translations. However, this time around Armenian literary works should be translated to other languages for the growing number of Armenians who cannot read Armenian but are interested in Armenian culture. Translation from Armenian will also familiarize non-Armenians with our culture. I hope this volume helped to fill that void.

I pray readers will find this volume of the trilogy also entertaining and informative.
