MONTEVIDEO—In an unprecedented announcement Friday, the Foreign Minister of Uruguay Luis Almagro said that his government has begun the process to make an official announcement regarding the status of Nagorno-Karabakh.

“Today we are looking into the issue [Nagorno-Karabakh] in order to present an official government position on the matter,” said Almagro. “I am personally convinced that Nagorno-Karabakh is part of historic Armenia and it must be independent and in a short while be unified with Armenia. This is the only resolution to the Artsakh issue.”

Almagro was speaking at a conference in Uruguay’s capital organized by the Armenian National Committee of South America and the Uruguay-Armenia parliamentary group marking the 20th anniversary of  Armenia’s Independence, highlighting Uruguay-Armenia relations.

Armenian Revolutionary Federation parliamentary faction leader Vahan Hovannesian welcomed Almagro’s statement calling it unprecedented.

“For the first time, a progressive and democratic country such as Uruguay is officially expressing a position, which reflects the posturing of the ruling political forces,” said Hovannesian, who stressed that the process will take some time.

  1. Again, Uruguay takes the lead

    Thank you.

Again, Uruguay has taken the lead. To my recollection Uruguay was the first country that recognized the Genocide of Armenians back in the ’60s, almost 50 years ago, paving the way for other countries to do the same.

Hopefully, progressive Uruguay will set the tone for others in South America and worldwide to join in, recognizing Artsakh as an independent country.

  2. Thank you, Uruguay!

Can’t wait to hear the final, official version.

    Hope others may follow suit.

  3. Urugauay et Nagorny-Karabagh

Bravo à l’Uruguay qui est en train d’ouvrir une brèche dans les positions figées des Occidentaux.

Puissent les autres Nations, dites avancées, suivre son exemple.

    1. Hopefully soon

Others, among the first being RA,  will follow  suit. Then  great  Turkey and its satellite state Azerbaijan will be  annoyed, nay dismayed, nay totally angered…They will say,  "What with  these ermenis  that  do not sit still and give up trying to get rid of us. They ought to know  better  than that.  We are the masters  of the area!"

On the other  hand  timing  is good  with Israel threatening to respond to great Turkey daring to chuck out the Ambassador from Ankara.

Wait  and see which will occur soon – a reprisal from Israel or great Turkey acting again?

One thing is certain  that our train  will not  stop at  that. We shall forge ahead by and by for Genocide Recognition by the Genocidal state and then some…
