Hovsep Emin

Hovsep Emin, born in Hamadan, Persia, dedicated his life to the independence for Armenia.  Although his Calcutta merchant father wanted him to become a merchant, Emin traveled to Britain to learn the military arts and thus play a part in gaining Armenia’s independence. After four miserable years in London, he presented to Lord Northumberland a prized horse which an Aleppo Armenian merchant had sent as a gift to the nobleman. Emin became friends with the lord and entered British high society. For the rest of his life he travelled seeking help from Russia, Georgia and Britain for the liberation of Armenia. He died at the age of 52.
