Shortly after we announced to Keghart readers in May the cessation of the electronic publication, several well-known diasporan journalists and writers expressed their interest in taking over the management of Keghart and maintaining the 18-year-old electronic publication’s commitment to everything Armenian.
We also received numerous emails from readers urging us to continue publishing Keghart. Informed and thoughtful comments were made by readers who emphasized the importance of publishing an English language magazine focused on Armenian—homeland and diaspora—affairs. Other readers stressed that the Armenian media in North America has a vital mission to provide non-Armenians with information about our history, culture, politics, and our challenges.
Team Keghart appreciates the concern of readers and their call for the continuation of the publication.
Following intense deliberation, Keghart management decided to entrust the responsibility of running the publication to Karen Mkrtchyan, a former Keghart editor. Karen joined the publication in 2020, and after serving admirably for more than a year, resigned due to his frequent public engagements that could have potentially seemed as a conflict of interest.
Karen was born in Massis, Armenia. In his early teens, he studied at the Armenian College and Philanthropic Academy (Հայոց Մարդասիրական Ճեմարան) in Kolkata, and he completed his final two years of high school at La Martinière for Boys, where he was appointed School Prefect. Following graduation, he enrolled at New Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) where he specialized in languages. He earned his Master of Arts degree (honors) in 2017 and returned to Armenia to engage in public life.
In India, Karen was active in student affairs, serving as Joint Secretary of the Delhi Chapter of the World Organization of Students and Youth (WOSY) and as a central executive member of the organization. He also acted as the chief election commissioner of the International Student Association at JNU.
Before being appointed executive director of the Armenia-India Business Council (AIBC)—a position he continues to hold—Karen worked as a reporter and cryptocurrency journalist for the Canada-based platform CoinChapter. He is also a project coordinator at the Indo-Armenian Friendship NGO and works with the Indian Cultural Center in Armenia.

Let’s see… Are we, the “Armenians” of the “great diaspora” who are sympathizers of the “tashnaktsutiun” by emotion or inheritance from our parents, “socialists”? Three intellectuals who broke away from the “Hunchakian” party (1887), founded the “Tashnak” party (1890) more than a century ago with socialist characteristics of that time.
Today, given the global evolution, among others, “the church and politics”, we must understand that most of the sympathizers are based in imperialist capitalist countries like the USA – Canada – Spain – South America – etc. etc., politically located in the center right. The questions are: Do the members know that they are full members of the Socialist International? – With whose authorization – who and in what year (1996 / 2003) joined the Socialist International (founded in 1951).
The Socialist International is an organization that brings together parties from different countries including Armenia. I think the question should be raised and debated in the Central Committee of the “Tashnaktsutiun: since the majority of the sympathizers in the diaspora are not of a socialist mindset, and I dare say also in Armenia.
